Favourite thing to do in science: Watching science programmes like ‘Food Unwrapped’ and ‘Trust Me, I’m a Doctor’ about how science impacts everything we do.
About Me: I’m a Medical Scientist and part-time PhD Student working in Dublin
I live in Dublin 12 with my husband, Ian. I love travelling the world, yoga, eating delicious food, techno music, and science of course!!!
My Work: I figure out if people have tuberculosis or not, and if that TB is resistant because of mutations it has developed.
The Irish Mycobacteria Reference Laboratory is based in St. James’ Hospital in Dublin. We test for tuberculosis in people from all-over Ireland. TB is highly contagious and can cause outbreaks. We work with Public Health to flag when an outbreak has occurred. Outbreaks can occur anywhere people gather together, even in schools! If we flag the outbreak early, we can treat the patient as soon as possible, and stop the disease spreading to anybody else.
What I'd do with the money: I would donate it to the program we already have for introducing TY students to the world of medical science here in St. James’ Hospital
