Basic science research—often called fundamental or bench research—provides the foundation of knowledge for the applied science that follows.

For example, a basic research project might investigate what proteins are made when a person becomes infected with a new virus (like the Zika virus) while an applied research project might use the proteins found in the project above to make a test for the Zika virus which could be used in the clinic on patient blood samples.

Basic scientific research can happen in any of the scientific disciplines such as biochemistry, microbiology, physiology, pharmacology, behavioral and social sciences etc. Applied scientific research can apply to any discipline but usually involves applying the knowledge gained in basic research to solve a problem or produce a product. Applied research relies on the knowledge we get from basic research.
