      Hi Piercia,

During my cancer research I got to work with ‘real’ tumours that were removed from patients during surgery. Using a very special technique called laser capture dissection, I was able to use a laser to cut some of the cancer cells out of the tumour and test the cells to see what genes were important in causing cancer in those cells. I had to travel to the University of Birmingham in the UK to do this work; I didn’t enjoy being away from home but I really enjoyed the science and those experiments were a really important part of my PhD.
